FBI WARNED OF SWEDISH TERRORIST PILOT SUSPECT

FBI warned about Chatty

A WOMAN flying instructor alerted FBI agents to Kerim Chatty nearly a YEAR ago, because she feared he might try a September 11-style atrocity.

Silke Eyles was suspicious because Chatty never bothered to pick up his prized pilot?s licence after passing his test.

Agents spoke to her by phone but did not see her in person until last night, when they visited her home in Ocean Isle Beach, North Carolina, following his arrest.

A police source said: ?The FBI are really embarrassed.?

Chatty joined the flying school run by Silke and hubby Peter after being kicked off another course.

Peter, 40, said: ?When he got his licence he did not care. People work hard for them and are usually happy to pick them up.

?It was strange. We tried to contact him and he never responded. We later shredded it.

?Once September 11 came we started putting things together.?

Silke added: ?My recollection of him is pretty faint now.?

Chatty moved to South Carolina six years ago to start a ?21,000 six-month pilot course at North American Institute of Aviation.

He got a student pilot permit in July 1996, entitling him to start a course for a commercial licence.

The would-be hijacker lived in a two-bedroom home near the airfield in the town of Conway.

He also held a South Carolina driver?s licence with an address of 1700 Airport Road, the location of the NAIA office.

But Chatty was thrown off the course for not making enough progress.

He eventually enrolled at Silke?s school 30 miles away.

After passing with her, he moved to south Florida where September 11 ringleader Mohamed Atta and eight al-Qa?ida co-conspirators lived.

The last official record of Chatty in America was in Pembroke Pines near Palm Beach in June 1998.

He lived in flats with up to four Middle Eastern men.
